21 die, 163 injured in road accidents

21 people have died while 163 have been injured in accidents since the beginning of the Easter holiday.

In the latest Easter holiday road traffic accidents statistics released by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, 21 people have died since Thursday night as compared to nine people who died during the same period last year.

163 people have been injured compared to 63 during the same period last year.

ZRP Chief Superintended Paul Nyathi said 143 accidents have been recorded countrywide as compared to last year where 112 accidents occurred during the same period.

He said 137 vehicles have been impounded for various defects and 3653 tickets have been issued out so far to motorists.

Chief Superintendent Nyathi said the increase in the number of deaths is a cause for concern and he urged motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads to avoid the unnecessary loss of lives.

Since the beginning of the holiday, Manicaland province has recorded the highest number of road traffic accidents deaths at seven, followed by Matabeleland North where 4 people died.

Midlands province has 3 deaths, while Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland East and Harare have 2 deaths each. Copyright © Africa 24 News. All rights reserved.
