Zimbabwe: 'Satanist' Rapist Gets 92 Years for Raping 20 Women

SERIAL rapist, Timothy Musakanya of Norton, who raped nearly 20 women from his town after threatening them with Satanism, has been slapped with a 92 year jail term for the offences.

Musaka, 27, will however spend 76 years effective after magistrate Hosea Mujaya suspended 16 years of his sentence on conditions.

Mujaya said it was shocking that a man of Musakanya's age could terrorise women of all age groups even if he was married.

The magistrate said a long custodial sentence would send a clear message to would-be offenders as such crimes were on the rise.

Musakanya was convicted of 17 counts out of 22 charges he was facing.

This followed some witnesses' failure to show and give evidence.

The rapist abused women in many places including the bushy area near the National Sports Stadium, Bluff Hill industrial site and Pomona dumpsite after convincing them he had secured employment for them in Harare.

Court heard he would take his victims during late hours of the day, board a commuter omnibus and drop off at Longchen plaza, some 5km from the Harare city centre, along Bulawayo road.

Musakanya would delay for hours until it got dark claiming he was waiting for his sister who was the one he was bringing an employee.

After that, he would tell his unsuspecting victim that his sister said they should go home before leading her on a long, 2 hour walk.

Court also heard he would tell his victim that boarding a commuter omnibus again was a waste of money, further insisting his sister's home was not very far away.

After reaching his rape spots, he would then start telling the victim that he had Satanism powers and owned snakes and frogs which were supposed to feed on her.

Musakanya would then give his victim an option to have her breast sucked by snakes and frogs or have sex with the creatures.

He would tell the victim that having sex with the snakes would save her life while if one chooses to have her breasts sucked, she would be attacked by satanic powers and die.

Most victims would then choose life by opting for sex with the snakes.

However, the snakes would come in his own image, he told them.

Fearing for their lives, the women would give in to the rape sometimes twice on the same night.

Musakanya would then forcibly take their cell phones, money and valuables including academic certificates before vanishing into the darkness.

He however denied the allegations during his trial and argued that the victims were his clients.

Musakanya told court that the women borrowed money from him and were supposed to repay interest but breached the contract, prompting him to confiscate their mobile phones.

The convict argued that rape allegations were fabricated to punish him for seizing the phones.

However, his evidence did not corroborate with that of his wife whom he had asked to testify as his witness.

The wife told court that she was not aware that his husband was running such a business and that she never signed any agreement as her husband had claimed.

The wife also told court that she would not know or deny that her husband committed the offences.

Also, Musakanya's brother gave evidence that did not tally with his own defence.

He was however the one who told court that one of the victims was interviewed on Radio Zimbabwe.

Musakanya, however, said it was unfair for him to be judged on a case which was discussed on national radio.

In this regard, he complained that his trial became a "press trial" as he was already judged by the public.

Court heard that a lot of people called and criticised him on radio during the programme.

Musakanya complained saying he was not given time to present his side.

Mujaya, however, ruled that his judgement would be based on evidence which was given by the witnesses in court which had similar undeniable facts.

The magistrate also condemned Radio Zimbabwe for airing an interview based on a court case which was yet to be finalised.

He also said the radio station had been warned.

Musakanya never used protection while raping his victims. The court heard only a few of his victims managed to fight him off and escape the abuses.

Other victims were set free after he discovered that they were going through their menstrual cycle.

Musakanya was arrested after one of the victims saw him walking by some shops in Norton and alerted the police.
