Confident and Undeterred Barlerin Returns To Cameroon Amidst Death Threats From Regime Loyalist!

The United States’ ambassador to Cameroon Peter Henry Barlerin has finally returned home. Brushing aside speculations over social media and in in some quarters that the out of favor diplomat might have run away never to return following his diplomatic spat with Biya government.

The US diplomat comes amidst shock, outrage, national and international condemnation as calls for the government to trial regime loyalist Banda Kani over inappropriate statements directed at the US top diplomat in the country

Banda Kani might not be a house hold name in Cameroon’s political chessboard but his life threatening statement of saying he will coffin the US ambassador to the country Peter Henry Barlerin and send him back to US over his statements last Month about the need for President of the republic to think of his legacy has drawn commendation with some calling for the Biya loyalists to be trial under the anti-terrorism law

The US diplomat felt out of favor with authorities n Yaoundé after his meeting with the head of state on May 17 2018 where amongst other things he advised the long serving president to think of his legacy like Nelson Mandela and George Washington who willingly gave up power even when they were constitutionally due to run again.

His statements sparked outrage in Yaoundé as the diplomat was summoned by the country’s foreign minister while government spokesperson as well as countless others went to frenzy as condemnation came from all quarters

The US State department responded immediately, saying their diplomat will not be intimidated by authorities in Yaoundé while continuing their call for dialogue to solve the ongoing Anglophone crisis which has been ravaging the country for close to two years

Ambassador Balerin’s comments were seen by government officials and many political analysts in the country as a support for regime change in the country even though the US diplomat later struggle to clarify his position and insist he or the US is not interested in regime change in the country

Ever since his infamous threats to the diplomats life on local television channel, Mr Kani is still working freely and the government is yet to issue a statements over the hate speech and no condemnation has been made.

Many are now asking if this disturbing silence is due to the act that the diplomat might have irked the eyes of Yaoundé authorities that they are turning a blind eye to their international commitment and obligations.
