African Union "Warns Candidates" - Cameroon Presidential Election

Moussa Faki the AU Union Commission President has called on Cameroonian political actors on October 10 to be “restraint” after one of the presidential candidates claimed “victory” before election results.

The AU Commission President in a statement emphasized that, “there is need for all political actors to exercise outmost restraint and refrain from any declaration or action likely to generate tension”.

This statement is provoked from Maurice Kamto’s declaration on Monday October 8 where he claimed victory” I was given the mission to shot the penalty, I shot it and I took it. I received from the people a clear mandate that I intend to defend until the end”.

However, Moussa Faki the AU Commission President said “any claim related to the electoral process must be addressed within the framework of existing legal mechanisms”.

Many other authorities have denounced Mr. Kamto’s statements as “unlawful” owing to the fact that, the Constitutional Council is the sole body charged with the responsibility of election results proclamation in Cameroon, which is done only 15 days after voting.
While others have rebuked the presidential candidate on his statement after the Sunday presidential election, others have termed it “lawful” supporting the fact that Maurice Kamto did nothing which was not within the law especially as in his statement, did not give a figure or percentage, nor did he indicate on what his claims were based.
